Causes of Death to be Examined in Overhaul of Death Certificates
To enhance safety measures, medical examiners will review the cause of death in all cases that have not been referred to the coroner.
These reforms, widely supported, will offer greater transparency for grieving families and contribute to public safety.
Starting on 9 September 2024, all deaths not under coroner investigation will be examined by medical examiners.
This government-led reform aims to protect the public and offer better support to bereaved families by introducing new procedures for death certification.
Dr. Alan Fletcher, National Medical Examiner, expressed his approval, stating:
‘I am pleased that the legal framework for independent medical examiners is now in place. This will ensure all bereaved families are heard, support patient safety initiatives, and improve processes through accurate referrals to coroners.'”
