Assistance with Funeral Costs

If you’re arranging a funeral and receiving certain benefits, you may be eligible for a Funeral Expenses Payment to help cover the costs.

The Funeral Expenses Payment can assist with a variety of costs, including:

• Burial fees for a specific plot
• Travel expenses for arranging or attending the funeral
• Body transportation within the UK (for distances over 50 miles)
• Death certificates and other required documents
• Up to £1,000 for additional expenses, such as funeral director fees, flowers, or the coffin

The payment will not usually cover all of the costs of the funeral. How much you get depends on your circumstances. This includes any other money that’s available to cover the costs, for example from an insurance policy or the deceased’s personal estate. If the deceased had a pre-paid funeral plan, you can get help to pay for items not covered by their plan.
